    The middle picture is bloodroot; flowers open first, then the leaves come and grow to be almost as large as a human hand. In addition to these three an early blooming tree, shadbush, is in bloom (also known as serviceberry or Juneberry). Also the beautiful ostrich fern, the one whose fiddleheads are edible in earliest spring, is about knee high. Keep watching it as it broadens and elongates into one of the most beautiful ferns.
