Finder of the Lost Apple Tree!

Local Hero Locates and Frees Hopelessly Entangled Victim!

On a recent steamy Saturday afternoon, while many of us were sipping iced drinks in front of our fans and air conditioners, local West Lebanon adventurer, Bart Guetti, set out on a quest to the western end of the MRG. His seemingly hopeless task was to locate an apple tree that had been planted in September 2019. Friends of Lebanon Recreation, Upper Valley Apple Corps, and other volunteers had planted it during Climate Strike Week in an effort to enhance MRG habitat..

A veritable jungle had grown up around the apple tree, Thick vines had clambered atop, dominating the environment, and strangling whatever lay in its path. Were it not for the nearly invisible wooden stakes installed last year, and for the determination of our intrepid hero, all would have been lost. Venturing forth by bike, clad in safety vest and neon pith helmet, and armed with machete, he tripped among the vines, struggling, chopping, and eventually, freeing the victim. “Just in the lick of time.  If I had not found it today, we never would have found it – the vines would have won!”

Here is a photo of the rescued Golden Russet apple tree (fondly dubbed “Russ” by our hero) after this stunning rescue. The vines that had clambered atop have been removed, as well as the surrounding tall grasses.

Good Year for Apples!

For the first year since being planted in 2019, the two apple trees at the MRG overpass pollinator garden near APD, are heavily laden with apples. They are not quite ripe , but look healthy, and will be available as an organic snack in a few weeks. Thanks to all Friends of Lebanon Recreation, Upper Valley Apple Corps, and other volunteers who helped plant these trees 5 years ago!

And, given the abundance of apples this year, might you have a supply that could help feed bears at Kilham Bear Center in Lyme, NH? They rehabilitate and release injured, orphaned, and abandoned black bear cubs . . some of which have been rescued in Lebanon. He has put out a request for apples:

There is a bin at the bottom of our
driveway at 172 Grafton Turnpike Rd, Lyme, NH 03768.
Thanks, Ben Kilham

The Trishaw – a Wonderful Resource!

Terri and Chipper Ashley

We are so lucky to have this Cycling Without Age trishaw and a host of volunteer pilots available to widen access to the MRG and NRT! Thanks to pilot Chipper Ashley for a great trip!

And behold! New swag to carry the message!

Much appreciation to all who made this program happen.

Thanks UV Rugby Club!

Thanks to the members of the Upper Valley Rugby Club who showed up to mulch and weed in the MRG Pocket Park by the tunnel. We appreciate your good energy and the Pocket Park and the blueberries look great!

Snapping Turtle Laying Eggs

Back in early May, Dan Moriarty sent a photo of a snapping turtle he had spotted on the MRG on a rainy day. She must have been doing reconnaissance, looking for a good place to lay eggs. At the end of May, he spotted her again . . .and indeed, she had found a sandy spot to lay her eggs. Isn’t it encouraging to know that, behind all the development on the Miracle Mile, there is this other world ?! Ah, the Mascoma River and the MRG! Thanks for sharing, Dan!

Finishing Touches on Girl Scout Community Service Project

These Girl Scouts from Troop 10659 were putting the finishing touches on the planter cubes by the MRG Pocket Park near the tunnel. It has been wonderful to see the continuing community spirit that is developing and enlivening the MRG!

Thanks to Girl Scout Troop 10659

Rainbow Bridge

“Crossing over the Rainbow Bridge” takes on new meaning, thanks to Girl Scout Troop 10659 and other volunteers. Wow! We are thrilled to see their hard work and planning come together this past weekend. The bridge looks so festive! Special thanks to Sherwin Williams for donating the paint and materials to get the job done. There are plans to decorate the nearby planters with murals and their individual handprints. Thanks to all involved for brightening the way!

Upper Valley Valkyries Rugby Team Refreshes MRG Park

With direction from Pocket Park creator, Cindy Heath, the Upper Valley Valkyries Rugby Team and friends refreshed the MRG park by the tunnel. Such wonderful energy! They worked non-stop for hours, weeding, mulching, and raking. The park looks great.

They also transplanted blueberry bushes from the shade to the sunny side. Those blueberries look happier already. Thanks to all for a job well done!. https://www.uppervalleyrugby.com/

Thanks to Hypertherm – New Signage!

The Mascoma River Greenway is a unique trail for the Upper Valley, and we want signage that celebrates that uniqueness. Hypertherm HOPE Foundation is already a financial donor to the MRG, and they stepped up their game by volunteering to cut these signs, using their patented Plasma cutting machinery, right here in Lebanon. These signs give a tip of the hat to the industrial history of the railroad corridor, while also giving thanks to the major donors that helped create our popular Greenway.

Sadly, some of these signs were vandalized the day after they were installed. Please, if you see something, say something. We appreciate the communities’ eyes and ears open for us.

Clean Up!

Photo- Rainie Kelly

Thanks to volunteers Donn Cann and Bob Leach for the heavy-duty clean up of tires and other trash on the western end of the MRG . . . and  to Recreation & Parks Facilities Manager, Doug McGrath, for hauling it all to the landfill.

“Throw away?”  There is no such thing as “away.”
