Mascoma River Greenway – The Vision

The idea for the Mascoma River Greenway emerged during a community trails forum co-hosted by the Lebanon Recreation & Parks Department and the Upper Valley Trails Alliance.

A team of consultants, ORW from White River Junction, ALTA Planning & Design from Boston, and Vanasse, Hagen, Brusslin of Bedford, NH reviewed the Greenway corridor, analyzed cost estimates, and developed a long range plan for the MRG. Click here to read the full report online, view maps of the Greenway and learn about the phases of construction and related costs.

Funding for improvements to the MRG corridor are included in the City of Lebanon Capital Improvement Program to some degree, but we need to actively raise funds for the project as well. Please consider making a contribution to the Greenway effort, or give us a hand at writing grant and foundation proposals! More Trails & Greenways = Better Health

Urban planners and public health officials are talking. How does adding trails and greenways to a community for transportation and recreation impact public health?

Turns out that bicycle and pedestrian improvements have  a lot to do with our choice to exercise and commute, ie, if they build it we will walk, bicycle, roller blade, skateboard, stroll with a stroller, zip along on a scooter, cruise in a wheel chair, ski and snowshoe on it. In fact, research shows that 85% of the residents of most communities want more safe places to travel and recreate without a car. And if planners, recreation and transportation professionals work together to provide more trails and greenways, we’ll reward them with a 25% increase in physical activity.

Sounds like a good deal to us! Please let us know if you would like to help the cause of making the Mascoma River Greenway a reality.

Welcome!

Welcome to the Mascoma River Greenway Homepage! Here you can find out everything from the plans for the greenway (“About”) to opportunities on how to get involved.  The development of the greenway and negotiations for the land have been going on for the last five years, negotiating with the NH Department of Transportation, cleaning up the downtown section, and acquiring support from the Lebanon City Council to make improvements to the tunnel under the Lebanon Mall. We are finally ready to move forward, and we need your help. The Mascoma River Greenway  was designed by and for the people of Lebanon and so it is appropriate that the citizens of Lebanon become involved in building this unique non-motorized transportation and recreation pathway for all to use.
